Nunca es nunca y muchas veces la música viene acompañada de una melodía que a muchos nos
I started recording the Who We Are EP around April 2013, though I had a break from recording a few months due to working and saving for my permanent residency in Australia, as I am originally from England. I started work on track 5 ‘Make Believe’ – during the time I wasnt recording I wrote ‘Dance Into Another Day’ and ‘Head Over Heels’. The other songs were ready to go, with Twilight being written back in 2009 originally for my music technology course back in England. I rewrote parts and decided it was a great song to put on the EP. It stands well at track 2. The producer of the EP was Peter Renzullo who owns Scudley Records in Perth, WA. I met him through a musician friend who suggested him.
Definitely Head Over Heels from my ep, ‘who we are’ – There’s a link below to the song
You fell out from the sky just like a lightning bolt.
Writing music is always different every time. I find the best songs are ones which fall out from the sky, and through me, I interperate the idea (whether how small, how big, whether it’s a melody or a title, a story …) into music. I usually mess around with chords before I come up with a melody, I end up writing the choruses firstly, and the title comes out of the lyrics for the chorus. I can then write the verses around this core idea … This can usually be the hardest part I find. Second verses get rewritten more than the first verses too.
My influences lie heavily in The Beatles tradition of songwriting. I do like The Beatles too. I also find the 80’s to be a big influence on my sound – Roxette, David Bowie, Depeche Mode, Simple Minds, Tears For Fears, Michael Jackson … although in the EP it’s more acoustic based … The sound for my next record will be more synth/keys based, more electric guitar, etc.
The launch for my Ep ‘who we are’ was amazing, I had some great soloists and bands play on the night (25th July 2014). I have since started working on my debut album, while also selling the ‘who we are’ EP at gigs, busking spots … I recorded a music video for track 6 from the EP which is called Head Over Heels. A great tune to play live!
This year is going to be full on, working on my debut album – which at the moment is left untitled, although I will be releasing a few singles before the whole album is released. A new music video will accompany the first single, as well a brand new official website coming soon too.
I wish I had spent more time producing track 6 ‘Head Over Heels’ as this ended up being one of the strongest songs on the EP. I have considered re-releasing this song on my upcoming album.
I think the only sacrifices I made for this Ep was recording too late, and being late for work. That’s all. Apart from that, everything ran smoothly.
James Atles … He’s a great friend, but he has also contributed in the past to projects myself and my partner Alysha Magnum (who features on the EP) have done.
