Audrey Vixen

I began experimenting with writing electronic music way back in 1999 when I first heard Massive Attack’s Mezzanine album. I created the alias The Invisionary which I began releasing stuff with through Myspace and eventually an album through label Nuform Music.

Audrey Vixen really kicked off after a took a break from writing and jumped back in as a duo with producer/vocalist Laura Hamilton in 2012. We wanted to do something a lot more organic and raw, but still very dark and electronic. The music has always been about creating atmosphere and emotion (I love my deep, resonating basslines) and from there we kind of found our way and it has shaped the music into what it is today, Laura has since moved on to other things but we still collaborate now and then (She co-wrote a song on my debut album Descension).

What song of yours is the one you like the most?

My favorite tune would probably be ‘Then We Collide’ which was co-written with the amazing Irish singer Tara Nielson. It is a song that perfectly captures the feel, both instrumentally and lyrically what Audrey Vixen is all about.

How do you write your music?
My music is written primarily with Logic Pro, a lot of VST plugins from Native Instruments and Rob Papen and a simple midi keyboard. I don’t have a fancy million dollar studio and up until I upgraded my Mac hardware, I was writing on a 2009 laptop that would constantly bug out or crash, so making music was a ridiculously painstaking experience but it also led to having a certain way i wrote (overlaying bounced tracks) that kind of made my stuff sound a little rougher, much like how producer BURIAL writes- which I liked.
What influences do you have?
My influences are quite eclectic. I grew up around a lot of old jazz records (My Father is a musician) and as I got older my interests began to swing into experimental artists like Ennio Morricone, Squarepusher and Future Sound Of London. I really got into dance music around 2003 when I first heard a track called ‘Finished Symphony’ by UK duo Hybrid and that was the very start of my future creating dance music that had a classical and emotional impact. I also have a huge love for Nine Inch Nails, UNKLE, Massive Attack, Lorn and Burial.
What´s the best experience you have had with your project?
When I independently released my EP ‘Butterfly Lullaby’ the support and love for it was mind blowing, I felt so humbled that people were actually buying my music and really enjoying it. I got an email way back that the EP had really helped somebody get through some tough times and that was probably the biggest and most important thing. If my music can help just one person, mission accomplished. No money in the world would ever change that.
What plans do you have this year?
As 2015 draws to a close I am focusing on some soundtrack projects for theatrical work and a documentary film. My last EP was a very ambient affair and I really find myself enjoying the film score style lately. I plan on doing something very different again. Always wanted to do an old-school industrial release, so who knows 😉
Mention something you don´t like about your project.
I still have not played live (or even done a live DJ set) This is something I aim to rectify in 2016, I have some grand ideas for a VJ/DJ set. Which would require finding another face for the band who is as insanely ambitious as me. I want to do something outside of the box, so hopefully the time will be right next year!
Mention the biggest sacrifice you did for your project.
Lost my day job! Probably not the smartest idea at the time, but we live and learn!
What band, music project or solist from your city do you like? Why?
Melbourne Australia has so many talented artists doing some amazing thing right now, the list would be far too long. We have some truly rocking hiphop crews and indie bands pushing the envelope right now.
If your project was a word, what would it be?
Cinematic
What´s your full name? Where were you when you answered the interview?
Trent Saunders, At home in Melbourne Australia
