Grand Pavilion

When did the project begin? and How did you meet yourselves?

We met in our final year of university in 2012 and after a brief period of playing more organic indie rock we began working seriously on the project that is Grand Pavilion mid 2013.

What song of yours is the one you like the most?

Stranger

Take a seat
Clear your mind
I’ve got a secret that I know you’ll never find
Hold on
I know you’ll never find
Hold on
Show your hand with smiling eyes,
I’ll furnish you with stories of my goodbyes
Hold on
Hold on
So stranger I confess,
I don’t know, I don’t you well
Your laughter couldn’t lie but your tongue will tell
Hold on
Well be up off the ground
yeah you know were good
You’ll be perfect so profound
Like I knew you would
Hold on
So Stranger won’t you let me get to know you
You’ve been wasted
You’ve got a way with words I’m attracted to
You haven’t tasted
All the things that can open up your mind
And I could show you
Excitement that you never thought you’d find
Stranger if you want me to
Tensions high, you lost the upper hand
But I wont ever let you down
Hold up hold up I never told you
Gestures lie, they’ve got a habit to fuel this fire I’ve found
So hold up hold up hold up I never told you
Rest assured I think I’ve found that girl I like
I promise your feet wont touch the ground
Hold on
So stranger now I know your name
I’ve got a feeling things wont be the same
Hold on
So Stranger won’t you let me get to know you
You’ve been wasted
You’ve got a way with words I’m attracted to
You haven’t tasted
All the things that will open up your mind
And I could show you
Excitement that you never thought you’d find
Stranger if you want me to
Stranger if you want me to

How do you write your music?

We write primarily as a duo although we live about 2 hours away from each other so most of the ideas are fleshed out separately and then combined in one intense session. As an electronic act we can get away with this as we write in Ableton and send the sessions back and forth before combining all the elements for mix. After the initial body of the song is done we write the vocals and add extra textures and field recordings to create interesting dynamics. As we both started as performing musicians a lot of the chord progressions are fleshed out on guitar before transitioning to synths.

What influences do you have?

We love playing around with different textures and sampling everyday sounds in our music. So we are hugely influenced by bands like Lapalux, Bonobo, Galimatius, Odesza.

What´s the best experience you have had with your project?

In 2014 we travelled Europe with a zoom recorder and a camera to capture samples for our debut EP. One of the most memorable moments of our trip happened at an old abandoned WWII Listening station in Berlin known as Teufelsberg. If you type it in to google you’ll see why it was a highlight. The huge dome at the top of building has the most surreal reverberations.

What plans do you have this year?

We are releasing our debut EP ‘Foreign Escapes’ which features tracks we wrote while we travelled Europe last year. To celebrate its release we’ll be doing a tour down the East coast of Australia. We are always writing new music so we plan on releasing a second EP this year too which we’ll finish after we relocate ourselves in London mid August.

musicsoundrocks2 - copiaMention something you don´t like about your project.

We are an electronic act but we play live instruments and run our own audio reactive projection show so we have a lot of gear that we have to bring to each show.

Mention the biggest sacrifice you did for your project.

A lot of time can be sacrificed for a project like this. Because we produce and mix all of the music ourselves we tend to spend weekends and late nights in a dark mix room when we are putting together remixes and records.

What band, music project or soloist from your city do you like?

We are big fans of The Kite String Tangle. His music is great and it’s rare to see an electronic act play live instruments, so we definitely admire him for that.

If your project was a word, what would it be?

-Textural
