“I first picked up DJing when I was about 15 so that’s 4 years now, it all started when my brother picked up this crappy little DJ controller that was the size of a sheet of paper. I used to play with that and he showed me how to use it and that’s my first sign of DJing. I didn’t pick up producing my own music until 2 and a half years ago and that was after I found the Trap genre but in it’s early form. I always remember my first few trap songs which were Original Don (Flosstradamus Remix), Loudpvck- Burner, RL Grime- Trap on Acid & Dirty Audio- Pourin’ Up. I loved the sound and thought it was a good way to get into production.”

What song of yours is the one you like the most?

My favourite song of my own is probably Crook with my bro Beck Devito a.k.a Vanilla Cup. The bass on that came out so clean and Beck worked wonders on percussion.

How do you write your music?

I write all my music on FL Studio. It’s what I learnt on and it’s what I’m most comfortable with. I’ve always made music from my bedroom with my pc, a pair of KRK Rokit 6s and an Akai LPK25. I’d love to get into a studio some time though!

What influences do you have?

My influences come from all over the place. Within Trap music I love what Stooki Sound are doing, always have. Other people are Gameface, JraB & Hounds they all have dope sounds. Outside of trap I like older UK bassline stuff from Mr Virgo, some more World vibes from Captain Planet & Balkan Beat Box and then into House & Bass with Redlight, Woz and Paleman.

What´s the best experience you have had with your project?

One of my best experiences was recently at a club called Tank in Sheffield back home in the UK. I’m not normally one to pick up a microphone or turn the music down but I dropped my Whitney Houston Remix ) and pulled the filter down and the whole crowd was singing it back which is all thanks to the original obviously, but then I pulled the filter back in and the beat dropped and it went off. It was a great night!

musicsoundrocks2 - copiaWhat plans do you have this year?

This year I’m heading back into the darker side of Trap music with some slowed down beats with some heavy 808 basslines. I’m also working on quite a mellow tech house EP with my ‘Yakeshi’ alias. I’m also looking forward to a project in the summer with two other people which we plan on creating a dancehall/bashment/reggae style so fingers crossed that pulls through!

Mention something you don´t like about your project.

Something I don’t like about my project is the time I spend on it. I would love to spend full time on my music and put my whole life into it but I’m still in college and have a part time job. Even after that I end up sitting on Youtube watching ‘fails’ and scrolling through my Facebook feed. I suppose it’s healthy to have breaks one in a while.

Mention the biggest sacrifice you did for your project.

My biggest sacrifice was getting kicked out of Sixth Form which is 2 years some English students take after they finished school. I spent a lot of time concentrating on music and that mixed with a dislike of my school ended in me getting kicked out. It was for the better though and I’m in a much happier place now.

What band, music project or solist from your city do you like?

In my city there isn’t too much going on that I know of since musically I’m more based in Sheffield. In Derby it’s worth checking out a lad named MORRT who lives just round the corner and is churning out some impressive house and chilled tunes. Also a guy called Nathan Dalton, he has a Trap influenced alias named Whyte and is dropping some hefty songs right now.

If your project was a word, what would it be?
– Abnormal

– Sam Taylor, better known as Sampul, sat in my bedroom having a break from production because I’ve just finished mastering two new tracks!
