Stone Angels
Stone Angels was a project conceptualised and created by GE and myself. At the time of the bands creation, Christchurch our home town, was being systemically destroyed by hundreds of large earthquakes. Stone Angels became a product of its environment and was used as an outlet for aggression and frustration for all the things that had happened to us throughout the quakes. Raw sewage lined the streets, buildings lay in ruin, nerves were on edge, so we sought to represent all of these things in an aural format with our music.
What song of yours is the one you like the most?
I really like the cover of In ‘The Shadow of the Horns’ that KS and Ge recorded:
and I like the track ‘Grave’ from our debut ‘Within The Witch’.
How do you write your music?
The writing process usually starts with a riff or two from GE or myself. From there we try not to dispose of any riff or idea thus not to taint the material with overthought. We will then build the idea up into a song taking the input of all parties until we are satisfied with the result.
What influences do you have?
Life experiences, drugs, music, the cosmos, horror films. Musically we draw hugely from the likes of Neurosis, Earth, Sleep, Electric Wizard and YOB. But we all listen to a wide range of music and take something from all our influences and musical tastes.
What´s the best experience you have had with your project?
Recording ‘Within The Witch’, playing New Zealand Stonerfest 2011, and playing Australian shows in 2013.
What plans do you have this year?
This year we are going to release a split LP with Auckland based band Shallow Grave. We have played our sole live show already for the year with Sinistrous Diabolus and Ulcerate. We have another split planned with another underground New Zealand metal band which we are going to record soon, and we are writing material for our next album.
Mention the biggest sacrifice you did for your project.
Money. The financial sacrifice of being in a band can make you question why you do it sometimes.
What band, music project or solist from your city do you like?
The best band from Christchurch, New Zealand is Sinistrous Diabolus. They embody the true essence of doom and misery in an audio format. Their recorded material is miserable and their live performance destructive.
